Info

Open Canoe Expeditions with Beyond Adventure

The open canoe is a wonderfully appropriate way to see Scotland's great rivers and lochs, and to access remote lanscapes for further exploration on foot.

Beyond Adventure provide an annual open canoe expedition program that includes descents of the Rivers Tay and Spey, Coast to Coast via the Great Glen, and expeditions into Moidart and the North West Highlands for walking and climbing.

Each trip guided by an expert guide who will ensure the correct ratio of safety and adventure, and we are fully approved by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority.

Custom expeditions can be organised for groups of 4 or more people.

Most expeditions include wild camping, though a B&B River Tay option is available, and we can arrange local accommodation before and after your trip.

Beyond Adventure is owned and managed by Stephen Macdonald who has worked full-time in outdoor education for the past 15 years. He holds British Association of Ski Instructors Telemark and Nordic qualifications, is a British Canoe Union Level 5 Coach as well as holding Scottish Mountain Leader Training Boards Summer and Winter Awards. Stephen is also the Coaching Development Officer for the Scottish Canoe Association.

Tay Descent
Reviewed By Stewart 2005-10-06

I did the Tay Descent with Beyond Adventure a couple of years ago and it was great. Loch Tay to Perth over 5 days. We were camping, but I see now this is listed as a B&B trip. Wild camping was all part of the expedition feeling for me but it wasn't always easy to find spots without "issues". Only 2 canoes on our trip, so I was paired with the guide. We all learned loads of technique + lots of practical little tips about handling a canoe, outfitting etc. Good deal of placid paddling, punctuated with a few little rapids and bigger features like Grandtully rapids, Stanley weir and Campsie Linn. Even as beginners we paddled all these (maybe because water levels were very low) and got to empty gear out of the boats and try things like surfing. Good company, good tuition, good times :)
